My five year old could do that

6–15 March 2026
My five year old could do that is a solo exhibition by Sydney-based abstract artist and Tyger favourite Ben Randall, on view at Tyger Gallery in Yass from 6–15 March 2026.
The show takes its title from a familiar phrase often used to dismiss abstract art, and turns it into a point of departure. In this new body of work, Ben explores instinctive mark making and the freedom of painting without self-consciousness, returning to a more direct and playful approach while remaining thoughtful in intent.
These fun, vibrant contemporary abstract paintings invite viewers to consider the space between spontaneity and control, and to bring their own interpretations to the work.

“The common catchphrase "my child could paint that" is often intended as a critique of abstract art’s perceived simplicity and lack of technical skill. I actually embrace this sentiment not as an insult, but as a compliment. To paint like a child is to achieve a state of creative freedom that most adults have spent a lifetime unlearning.”
“My process deliberately harks back to those early memories of naive play. I seek to recapture the visceral joy of mark making by thinking back to the period of life where the hand moves before the inner critic intervenes. By revisiting this headspace I explore the beauty of thinking without consequence, where a stroke is made for the sake of its own energy rather than its representational accuracy.”
“While the aesthetic may mirror the freedom of a child, the intention behind each piece is deeply considered. My works use the language of childhood to navigate the complexities of adulthood, proving that the most profound truths are often best expressed through the uninhibited, raw clarity we once possessed. Behind every "simple" stroke lies a disciplined effort to strip away pretension and return to my authentic, meaningful core.”
