Some landscapes tell you exactly where you are. Sarah Robinson’s don’t, quite.

Fragments sits in the space between what is seen, what is remembered, and what slips away. These paintings offer a piece of a story, but not the whole thing – leaving room for the feeling of a place, a half-memory, or an unspoken moment to surface.

Working with thin, watery layers of paint, Sarah allows forms to emerge gradually. Some recognisable parts hold their shape; others drip, blur, pool or disappear. The result is a body of work that feels unsettled, atmospheric and quietly alive.

This is Sarah Robinson’s solo show at Tyger, built on the idea that what lies unseen in a landscape can be just as powerful as what is clearly shown.

  • Fragments is a show that explores the power that lies in vagueness. Walking the line between ambiguity and clarity these paintings present a piece of a story but not the whole thing. This allows for viewers to wonder and fill in the gaps. Building forms from watery layers of paint, some recognisable parts emerge and others get washed away by drips on the canvas

  • Sarah Robinson is a Canberra-based artist whose work explores what lies unseen within the landscape – the traces, memories and sensations that sit beneath what is directly observed.

    Working with thin, watery layers of paint, Sarah builds images that seem to emerge and dissolve at the same time. Forms appear gradually, while drips, pools and transparent passages create a sense of movement, uncertainty and atmosphere.

    Her paintings sit somewhere between landscape, memory and abstraction, offering fragments of a story rather than the whole thing.

    In 2025, Sarah received the Tyger New Ground Award, selected from the ANU School of Art & Design graduate exhibition. Fragments is the result of that award, and marks a beautiful next step for this exciting emerging artist.

  • The Tyger New Ground Award was created in 2025 as a way for Tyger Gallery to support emerging artists at the beginning of their exhibiting careers. Selected from the ANU School of Art & Design graduate exhibition, the award recognises artists whose work feels ready to step beyond art school and into a wider public conversation.

    Rather than being a prize that ends on the night, New Ground is about building a relationship. The award includes a solo show at Tyger, along with ongoing support, conversation and opportunities to show work to new audiences. For Sarah Robinson, that has included exhibiting with Tyger at Affordable Art Fair Brisbane and Affordable Art Fair Melbourne in 2026.

    Fragments is the outcome of that award: Sarah’s solo show, and a beautiful next step for an artist whose work has already found a strong connection with Tyger audiences. We’re proud to have backed Sarah from the beginning, and very pleased to now present this new body of work at the gallery.

  • Fragments opens at Tyger on Saturday 12 September, with an opening celebration from 3pm.
