Amanda Mahony is an abstract artist based in Eora/Sydney, who paints figures and emotion-rich landscapes.
Her figures in this series use colour and texture to explore the beautiful tension of being human, the parts of us that are bright and visible, and the parts we keep more hidden.
Her process-based practice involves working with acrylics and mixed media, like a tapestry, building the surface over time. Mahony employs sgraffito, sanding, scoring and scraping away layers to reveal the underlying colours and textures. She also builds depth and atmosphere through layers of translucent glazes.
Amanda is a 2023 BFA painting graduate of the National Art School and holds a Bachelor of Media (Journalism and Communication) from Macquarie University, Sydney.
She expanded her skills by spending four months studying oil painting under the mentorship of artists Dimitra Milan and Elli Milan at the Milan Art Institute in Arizona, USA in 2019.
Amanda's artwork has been featured on ABC iview's TV series OPTICS and she has been exhibited as a 2025 finalist in the 'Fairholme Open Art Prize Exhibition’, Toowoomba, QLD. She exhibits regularly in group exhibitions at Sydney Road Gallery and Tiliqua Tiliqua Gallery in Sydney.

“The ‘I see you’ series is an exploration into the duality of existence. We see this balance reflected everywhere in our physical world (light and dark, the sun and the moon) but I am most interested in how it defines the very nature of being human.
“Taking inspiration from the internal struggle famously written by Stevenson in Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, every human being has good and evil within them, but what’s important is how you behave and the decisions you make.
“Ultimately as with the natural world, it’s all about balance and this series is a reminder that being human is complicated, we all carry a wild and calm side, something that we all live with – a side-effect, if you will, of the human condition.
“I wanted to capture the quiet strength found in our most important bonds, between mother and daughter, strangers meeting for the first time, and friends who feel like family. These paintings aren't just about the shadows we carry, but about the person who stands in the light with us and says, "I see you".”
