Alan is an artist living in Yass who has been interested in art, craft and design since childhood. These interests which have steered his study choices and working life of teaching, gallery retailing and graphic designing.

He mostly paints with oils, creating compositions from his own photography and sketches. He varies his subject matter; however, his underlying efforts have been in developing strong composition: exploring formal aspects of art such as geometry, perspective and colour composition.

"When I take a photo, it is usually of something I have not sought out or planned; for example, a casual glimpse of a partially hidden building snapped on a walk (obscured in the same way that flowers in a vase obscure a jug) or the ‘architecture’ in a group of still life objects,"

"Resolving aspects of technique, style and the creation of the painted surface is an engaging task with each new subject."

Alan has exhibited at Tuggeranong Art Centre, Belconnen Art Centre, Strathnairn Gallery and the South Gallery near Goulburn. He has been a finalist at the Caleen Art Award.

On Table and Street is a collection of still lifes and street scenes.

"I am interested in both genres not only due to my interest in design of buildings and ceramic vessels and other everyday things: these genres also present some of the same formal artistic concerns, particularly the arrangement of objects in space or on a plane," says Alan.

"I’ve lived in Yass for thirteen years, finding inspiration for paintings in it’s streets and old buildings (sometimes just as much for some haphazardness as for anything esle. Also, the surrounding landscape environment and, of course, the great community of artists in the region."
