Kathleen Wigan

Kathleen Wigan is a Sydney-based abstract artist whose layered works explore colour, texture and intuitive mark-making. Often created using repurposed and sustainably sourced materials, her calm, atmospheric paintings are designed to be lived with and enjoyed every day. Kathleen was a finalist in the Fisher’s Ghost Art Award in 2023.

  • Kathleen, originally from Hobart, Tasmania, developed an early connection to nature and environmental change. Her work reflects a respect for space, light and intentional mark-making. Influenced by travel, each piece remains open to interpretation, shifting with light and context. Built in layered compositions, her artworks reveal depth over time, inviting closer viewing while exploring palette, hue and the application of pigment.

  • “As it has been for some years now, and will continue to be in the future, my intention to provide an opportunity for most people to be able purchase an original artwork.

“Once you are in possession of an original artwork, your space is instantly uplifted. Spending many hours admiring the work. Wondering what the artist was thinking. Why they chose this palette to convey their story. Opening conversation with visitors to your space about the piece you have now adopted and what you love about it most.

“Originals are one of a kind. Often if the artist is requested to reproduce a similar artwork, especially if it is an abstract piece, this is almost impossible to do. This is mainly because when we are painting, adding brush strokes and those intentional marks, it is done in an almost subconscious way. Applying pigment, a touch darker, slightly softer and a bold mark here, subtle implications of shape - and you have it. Starting with a plan but going with your visual gut.

“When possible, I use sustainably sourced materials. Often boards or canvases that are framed in less expensive materials. This process allows me to offer originals at an affordable rate. If you love the artwork but want an elaborate frame - that choice is yours.”

  • Tyger Gallery is open Saturday–Sunday–Monday, 10am–2pm.
