‘I aim to create a feeling of place through colour, tone, line and shape, drawing the viewer into the work and offering them a sense of the landscape that has so stirred my imagination.’

“This painting is based on drawings from my travel sketchbook and concertina sketchbooks which tell the story of two weeks spent in Puglia, the ‘heel’ of Italy in 2023.”
“Even though a photo can capture the detail of a scene, I know that if I draw the experience it lodges in my memory in a visceral way, reflecting the sounds, the colours and the smells of that exact location.”
“Puglia is a region of vivid blue skies, of ancient olive trees, of flinty ground and stone fences that tell the stories of hundreds of years.”
Penny Verdich, 2025.
