For as long as Valeska can remember, drawing and painting have been her most favourite things to do.

Combining her love of textiles and painting Valeska has sold her art for many years at handmade markets, primarily paintings on silk.

Upon graduating from ANU, Valeska was successful in winning a residency at Bundanon Homestead with the Boyd Trust in 1996. The residency influenced her so much it changed her practice completely to a total focus on painting and drawing.

Now Valeska paints with Acrylic and Oils and she loves to draw, especially with charcoal.

“On the evening of Tuesday 28 January 2020, it was very dark.

“Heading home, driving south approaching the Erindale Drive and Sulwood Drive intersection, a shocking scene was revealed.”

“The whole of Mt Tennent at 1375m, was ablaze”.

“Red, orange and yellow flames were leaping high into the air in the pitch-black sky”.

“Emotions of fright and terror ran high as the night time vision of the blazing mountain grew larger and closer”.

Night Mountain I, is the artists’ response to the alarming scene that was unveiled as her car continued south towards the blazing mountain.

The abstracted, minimal image, made with found object timber, evokes a sense of dramatic emotion. The stark contrasting colours in the work, unlocks Tilly’s memory of the enormity of the disturbing scene that was developing in her world that night.

The work, Night Mountain I, takes Tilly straight back to that night, revisiting the shock of the frighteningly breathtaking scene unfolding before the artist eyes. So close to home, this devastating event was happening in her world.
