“Earth, stone, paths, tracks, rivers and creeks are elements, but the lines may also suggest boulders rising from the ground. I quite like the ambiguity.” Alan Harding

Tyger is thrilled to welcome back local favourite Alan Harding for our upcoming abstract landscapes show, Living in Another World.

The show brings together around 40 artists from all over the country to show us the world we know and love through an abstracted lens.

Register now for our opening celebrations of Living in Another World - Saturday 20 April, 2-4pm.

Alan’s recent show at Tyger, On Table and Street, was a huge hit with gallery visitors, and his work for Living in Another World showcases another side of this extraordinarily talented Yass-based artist.

Ahead of Living in Another World, Alan told us about enjoying ambiguity, and striking the right chord in his works.

How would you describe your work in the show?

“Earth, stone, paths, tracks, rivers and creeks are elements in landscape: Represented abstractly in painting as lines, shapes, colours and textures.”

“It isn't necessarily so that they have be taken to be an aerial perspective - these lines also may suggest boulders rising from the ground. I quite like the ambiguity.”

Tell us about where and how you create your work?

“I live and work in Yass. I use oils, painting a variety of subject matter. In this abstraction I've used both brush and painting knife. The background has been reworked and textures from underpainting appear, suggestive of weathering or erosion.”

“The design of three 'tracks' needed to synthesise in the way three musical notes make a chord. Their shape got resolved during the making of the work, when I was satisfied with their balance and shape etc.”

What inspires you?

“For paintings like this I've been inspired or influenced by abstract expressionists and colour field painters as immersion in landscape itself. In Australia, I greatly admire painters like Elizabeth Cummings and Ildiko Kovacs.”

Living in Another World runs from 19-28 April at Tyger Gallery in Yass. The online catalogue for the show will go out to subscribers in the week before opening. Sign up here to make sure you don’t miss out.
