Heather Wilkins is a Canberra based artist whose practice began primarily in photography and has expanded into graphite and other media. She creates works of detailed realism and hyperrealistic drawing.
After graduating from the ANU School of Art and Design in 2004, Heather pursued a wide range of interests including horticulture, botany, floriography, and various forms of art and craft.
Her commitment to artistic practice, in whatever form it takes, is reflected in her finely rendered pencil drawings. These works aim to convey a sense of nostalgia and melancholy through their intricate detail and subject matter.
Much of Heather’s work is shaped by themes of memory and loss. She draws inspiration from the desire to preserve fleeting moments, to hold onto what has passed, and to give form to the intangible. These works reflect an interest in impermanence and invite the audience to consider the beauty of what once was and the subtle traces it leaves behind.

“My current body of work explores the passage of time and the impermanence of the natural world. Through deliberate composition and techniques, I aim to create moments of stillness that invite reflection. My intention is to guide the audience to the beauty found in natural forms, textures and shapes.
“These drawings are shaped by a desire to preserve what is fleeting. I am drawn to the details that often go unnoticed, the curve of a leaf, the shadows cast by a stem or the texture of fading petals. Each element becomes a way of holding onto something ephemeral, a gesture of remembrance.
“The work reflects my interest in how objects and forms can carry emotional weight, acting as reliquaries for memory and markers of time.
“By focusing on the delicate and the overlooked, I hope to create space for contemplation and invitation to consider what we keep, what we lose, and how we make sense of change.
“The process itself is slow and deliberate, mirroring the act of remembering. In this way, the drawings become both a record and a response, capturing the balance between holding on and letting go.”
