“Figures have been weaving their way back into my landscapes lately. The figure in these works embodies a joyful resistance, grounded in the sensual and corporeal memory of place. This painting references the Kiah River on the New South Wales East coast, a place I have visited since I was young.
“Painted with a restricted palette throughout, she is neither separate from nor inseparate to the environment—neither concealed nor unconcealed. Either way, she grants freedom to a matrilineal lineage to move freely in an Arcadian future, as we navigate an altered relationship with the natural world.”
Sarah Bell, 2025.
