Tyger is excited to welcome the superb artist Brooke Whelan to the gallery for our upcoming abstract landscapes show, Living in Another World.

The show brings together around 40 artists from all over the country to show us the world we know and love through an abstracted lens.

Register now for our opening celebrations of Living in Another World - Saturday 20 April, 2-4pm.

Brooke’s work in the show is Beauty in the Shadows, a stunning 60x60cm acrylic on canvas work bathed in rich, glorious and warm colour. We absolutely love it.

Ahead of the show, Brooke told us about blending man made elements with their surroundings in her work, how colour can convey feeling, and creating a nostalgic sense of time and place .

How would you describe your work?

“My artwork is nostalgic, haunting and romantic simultaneously, with colour used to convey a mood or feeling.”

“I like to play with vantage points and perspective, shifting between an interesting foreground, to what is seen beyond, and how the man made elements and the surroundings are affected through interaction with the natural world over time.”

“Expressive broad brush strokes and saturated rich acrylic colours are used to depict the light filtering through the old and new architectural elements, capturing the sun and representing the colour of the day and season. Construction lines, scratches and intuitive brush strokes explore the relationship of tight and loose elements in the same composition and are used to enhance the aesthetic and add charm and patina to the image.”

What inspires you?

“Growing up in country Victoria I am inspired by my natural surroundings and the historical features of my hometown, and capturing the colour, shapes and patterns in the landscape.”

What do you hope people feel when they see your work?

“Rather than focus on creating a personal narrative, my artworks evoke a nostalgic sense of time and place. The viewer is left to see what they want to see or how they resonate with the artwork.”

“My goal is to inspire those who see my work to look more carefully at the world around them, to discover beauty in unusual places.”

Living in Another World runs from 19-28 April at Tyger Gallery in Yass. The online catalogue for the show will go out to subscribers in the week before opening. Sign up here to make sure you don’t miss out.
